General Information
Buchanan High School is a comprehensive four-year high school enrolling 2531 students in grades nine through twelve. The school opened in the Fall of 1991 and graduated its first senior class in the Spring of 1995. Buchanan High School is accredited by The Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and holds memberships in The College Board and the National Association for College Admission Counseling. Buchanan High School is recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School and a California Distinguished School.
The Community
Buchanan High School is situated in a rapidly growing suburban community in the northeast section of Clovis with a strong concentration of business managers and professionals.
Curriculum
Schedule
The course schedule is organized on a rotating block schedule. Students attend all courses on Monday and attend alternating blocks on Tuesday through Friday.
Graduation requirements: 230 units to include:
A minimum of 230 units are required for graduation with course requirements as follows:
English - 8 semesters
Mathematics - 4 semesters (including Algebra 1 and Geometry)
Social Science - 7 semesters (World Geography, World History, U.S. History, Government and Economics)
Science - 5 semesters (including biological, physical and health)
Physical Education - 8 semesters
Academic Breadth – 2 semesters (Foreign Language or Visual or Performing Arts)
Other: 2 additional semesters (Foreign Language, Visual or Performing Arts, Science (3rd year), Math
(3rd year), Language Arts, or Math Intervention)
District Proficiency
California High School Exit Exam is required

Special programs include accelerated placement, work experience, college courses without credit, bilingual education, and special education.
GPA/Class Rank
GPA is weighted, based on all graded courses on 7 semesters of study. A 4.0 scale is used for all classes with the exception of Advanced Placement courses where A=5, B=4, C=3, D=1, F=0. Grade scales and variations are decided by instructor.
