Over the last two school years, students have been attending the San Joaquin Valley Town Hall Lecture Series. The San Joaquin Valley Town Hall Lecture Series is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to bring thought provoking lectures to the valley. They provide free tickets to local students to every lecture. It is a great opportunity for our students and community. Last year students attended lectures by Leon Panetta, Marc Lapadula, Wes Moore, Dave Barry, Adam Steltzner, and Lisa Genova. Students recently attended the first lecture for this year on October 18. The lecture was with Vicente Fox, a previous president of Mexico. Buchanan had approximately 30 students attend.
During each lecture, every school in attendance is allowed to submit two Merit Scholars. These Merit Scholars are invited to attend a pre-lecture small group question and answer session with the featured speaker. At the conclusion of the small-group session, the speaker draws a name from the list of the Merit Scholars and gives away a $500 scholarship. Buchanan had two students win the $500 scholarship in the past two years. The first was Alex Peralta, class of 2016 and the other was Greta Gledhill, class of 2017.
